When you’re looking for a tattoo, it’s not just about the design you want. The size may affect the amount of detail, placement of the tattoo and how it is going to appear as the skin ages.

When designing a tattoo at Markd Tattoo, considering the size early will help the design fit better on the body. The smaller the tattoo, the more it will lack detail while a larger tattoo will require more room and time to complete. Understanding what works with the design will make the finished product more balanced.

    Small Tattoos Require Simple Detail.

Unfortunately, small tattoos may not be ideal for detailed designs. Fine lines will be closer together should become harder to read with the aging of the tattoo.

That doesn’t mean that small tattoos are not beautiful. Basically it means that the design must be appropriate for the space. Small spaces are better suited to simple shapes, clear lines, and little detail.

The artist may recommend that you remove small details, or simply enlarge the design. This can help in maintaining the clarity of the tattoo over time.

The location of the tattoo has an impact. If the design is shaped to fit a small area like the wrist, ankle, forearm, or upper arm, then it can be very effective.

The larger the tattoo, the more detail one can get.

Larger Tattoos provide the artist with more space for shading, line work, colour and background detail. Useful for portraits, animals, Japanese style, etc. and designs that have multiple parts.

A larger size can also have a more natural flow around the body. Wide shoulders, backs, thighs and chests provide more space for extensive designs and larger art.

The artist at Markd Tattoo can view the entire tattoo area and may adjust the size as they wish. This will ensure that the tattoo is in the right place and not too small for the area.

More advanced tattoos require more than one session and it is important to consider the length of time as well as how the tattoo will be finished during multiple appointments.

The comfort of the placement can vary.

Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others. Less padded areas like ribs, feet, knees, elbows and ankles may feel less comfortable while getting tattooed.

Some people may find it easier in places that have more muscle or softer tissues, but everyone is different. The intensity of the pain also will depend on the size of the tattoo, how long the session is, and the kind of work that is being done.

When deciding your final placement, if you are concerned about comfort, discuss it with the artist. They can advise you on what is expected, and whether you want to design the space for it.

It can also help determine a position for sitting or lying down for a longer period of time.

Consider how the Tattoo will look after a few years.

The design of the tattoo may change slightly as a person ages. Many years after getting a tattoo, the following factors may alter the appearance of a tattoo: sun exposure, skin movement and natural body changes.

This is why size is an important factor. The smaller the detail, the longer it may not be as easily seen, and if it’s large enough, there’s enough space between pieces of the design, it will be easier to read.

If the areas receive high levels of sunlight, they can also start to fade faster when not protected. Fingers and hands can become worn out otherwise as they are used and washed so much.

A good artist will consider these when making suggestions about size and placement.

Choose Size Based on the Design

There is no optimal size for tattoos. It will be determined by the piece of art, the body section and the desired style.

Markd Tattoo can assist customers with determining if the design requires additional room, or if it can be appropriately reduced to fit. It can be helpful to be willing to listen to advice to prevent overloading on information with a small space.

A tattoo should look natural, not forced onto the body. You can save yourself a lot of trouble if you take the time to select the appropriate size which will enable the design to look cleaner, fit more naturally, and remain easier to read over the years.
